ICE – News no.3 (Heating coils – Hyundai HB 50)

ICE was recently contacted by an owner of a large fleet of VLCC's and invited to quote and design an idle heating system for the boilers onboard a series of six quite new crude oil tankers.

Our proposal and quotation was accepted by the client and a contract was signed for the design, manufacturing and installation onboard of total 12 heating coils and related equipment in the vessels boilers.

The boilers are Hyundai HB-50 "D-type / two drum water tube boiler" with 50.000 kg/h steam capacity at 16 barg. The heating coils are operated with 6K steam supplied from vessels exhaust gas economiser, allowing to heat up the two boilers onboard each vessel to + 1 barg pressure in order to avoid oxygen / sulphuric acid corrosion during vessels sea passage where the boilers are normally not fired.

ICE have proposed and delivered a design with one 90 kW heating coil to be installed in each water drum of the boiler, as well as all related equipment, - i.e. drain system incl. steam traps, all necessary valves, piping and insulation.

As the installation of the heating coils involves penetration of the shell of the water drum, strength calculations etc. had to be produced for Lloyds Register of Shipping (LRS) who classed the vessel. As ICE is a "Class 1" approved manufacturer certified by LRS (and Det Norske Veritas – DNV) this part of the work was also carried out without any delays.

Installation onboard was carried out by one of our riding squads of professional and skilled boilermakers, ensuring both the best quality as well as completion within the schedule as agreed in the contract.

Once again, we are proud that the installation was carried out without interrupting the vessels schedules and operation
